A 5-day Baking workshop Organized by NFSM&D

The Department of Home Science hosted a 5-day baking workshop for the NFSM&D students from the 17th to 21st July 2023. Ms. Harshita, a young passionate home baker took a tremendous effort in explaining the basics and science behind baking and its techniques.

Day 1 – The session was on how to start up a baking business and be a successful home baker. It emphasized that perseverance is the key. The resource person gave a live demo of her signature Millet Based Carrot Cake. She taught the right technique to combine the cake batter so that the cake is soft and fluffy and not dense and leathery.

Day 2 – The students were taught to bake Eggless Chocolate Cup Cake. Tips on making the right batter consistency were shared. Ms. Harshita also taught the students how to make a ganache. She also asked the students to volunteer and get hands-on training.

Day 3 – The session was on her seasonal signature Mango Tub recipe. She gave a brief explanation of bento cakes and the mould to bake them. She demonstrated how to make a fresh fruit compote using fresh produce. The students also learnt how to decorate a cake.

Day 4 – The session was on how to make healthy versions of cookies and the variations that can be incorporated.

Day 5 – The session was on the ingredients and the procedure to make brownies. Students were given a chance to follow her instructions step by step. She also taught the students how to frost a cake. Students enjoyed frosting the cake. It turned out to look good on the very first attempt of our students.

It was a feast for the students to taste the cakes and to learn the right recipe and techniques to get a perfect finish. She highlighted the 3 important aspects to get the desired result in baking. They are the Temperature, Mode and Time that we set to bake.

She wished our students and ended the session by saying that she looks forward to see young upcoming entrepreneurs to start their own baking business by following their passion.
