January 30, 2025
The Department of Visual Communication at S.A. College of Arts & Science organized an
insightful two-day workshop on Design Thinking, conducted by Mr. Jothivelu Periyasamy, a
leading UX/UI designer known for his expertise in wireframing, prototyping, and multimedia
content creation. The workshop provided students with a comprehensive understanding of
Design Thinking concepts and their application in UI/UX design.
Day 1: Theoretical Exploration of Design Thinking
The first day of the workshop, held on 28th January 2025, focused on the theoretical concepts
of Design Thinking. Mr. Jothivelu began the session by introducing the fundamental principles
of Design Thinking, emphasizing its importance in problem-solving and user-centric design.
Key topics covered during the session included:
Empathizing with Users:Understanding the needs, challenges, and emotions of end-users.
Defining the Problem: Crafting clear and actionable problem statements based on user insights.
Ideation Process: Generating creative solutions through brainstorming and collaborative
thinking.
Prototyping: Developing low-fidelity and high-fidelity prototypes to visualize and test ideas.
Testing and Iteration: Emphasizing the iterative nature of Design Thinking to refine solutions.
The guest shared real-world examples of how Design Thinking is applied in various industries,
particularly in the digital design domain. He highlighted case studies where innovative
solutions were achieved using Design Thinking methodologies, inspiring students to adopt this
approach in their creative projects.
The interactive session encouraged students to ask questions, share their perspectives, and
engage in discussions. The theoretical insights laid a strong foundation for the hands-on
activities planned for the second day.
Day 2: Practical Application of Design Thinking
The second day, conducted on 29th January 2025, was dedicated to the practical
implementation of Design Thinking concepts in UI/UX design.
The session began with a demonstration of software tools commonly used in UX/UI design,
including:
Wireframing Tools such as Figma and Adobe XD.
Prototyping Tools to create interactive user interfaces.
Mr. Jothivelu guided students through a step-by-step process of applying Design Thinking to
a real-world problem. The activity involved:
Empathizing with a Target Audience: Students created user personas and identified pain points.
Ideation and Brainstorming: Teams collaborated to propose innovative solutions.
Wireframing: Students sketched out wireframes to represent the user interface layout.
Prototyping: Using Figma, students developed clickable prototypes to visualize their ideas.
Testing and Feedback:Students tested their prototypes with peers and received constructive
feedback for improvement.
The hands-on session allowed students to bridge the gap between theory and practice, gaining
a thorough understanding of how Design Thinking principles are integrated into the UX/UI
design process. The workshop concluded with a Q&A session, where Mr. Jothivelu addressed
individual queries and provided tips for refining their skills.
The workshop was highly beneficial for students, providing them with
A solid understanding of Design Thinking principles and their significance in creative problem-
solving.
Practical exposure to using industry-standard tools for wireframing and prototyping.
Enhanced teamwork, creativity, and analytical skills through collaborative activities.
Motivation to explore career opportunities in the field of UX/UI design.
Students expressed their appreciation for the engaging and informative sessions conducted by
Mr. Jothivelu. They shared positive feedback, acknowledging the workshop as a valuable
addition to their academic and professional journey.
The two-day workshop on Design Thinking successfully equipped students with essential
knowledge and practical skills required for a career in UX/UI design. The Department of Visual
Communication extends its gratitude to Mr. Jothivelu Periyasamy for sharing his expertise and
inspiring students to think innovatively.
