College of Arts & Science successfully organized a seminar on "The Neuroscience of Leadership: Enhancing Decision-Making and Emotional Intelligence" on January 29, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Renowned expert Dr. Abhishek led the session, providing valuable insights into the intersection of neuroscience and leadership.

Dr. Abhishek explained how the brain, particularly the prefrontal cortex, influences leadership skills, decision-making, and emotional intelligence. The session covered cognitive biases, stress management, and adaptive thinking. Emotional intelligence was emphasized as a crucial leadership trait, highlighting self-awareness, empathy, and social skills.

The seminar also explored neuroscience-based leadership strategies, including mindfulness, cognitive flexibility, and resilience. Attendees, especially from the computer applications field, gained practical insights into stress management, teamwork, and innovative problem-solving.

S.A. College of Arts & Science Hosts Seminar on Empowering the Next Generation of Women in STEM: Navigating Challenges and Seizing Opportunities under NEP On January 8, 2025, the “Empowering the Next Generation of Women in STEM: Navigating Challenges and Seizing Opportunities under NEP” seminar, organized by the School of Commerce at S.A. College of Arts & Science and sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research - SRC (ICSSR-SRC), attracted widespread attention, receiving over 100 article submissions on its theme. The seminar aimed to address gender disparities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and align with India's Vision Viksit Bharat @ 2047, marking the 100th year of independence.

Focusing on the obstacles women face in STEM, such as gender bias, harassment, the glass ceiling, and work-life balance issues, the seminar sought to empower women to overcome these challenges and contribute to a more inclusive society under the National Education Policy (NEP). The seminar’s objectives included exploring the current status of women in STEM, identifying NEP opportunities, and proposing actionable recommendations for policymakers and educational institutions.

The event addressed key themes, including promoting gender equality in STEM education, enhancing leadership opportunities for women, and sharing national and international best practices.

An exceptional lineup of speakers shared valuable insights:

Dr. RameshBabu Boga, Managing Director of BogaR Laboratories LLC, USA, delivered the keynote address on the challenges and opportunities for women in STEM.

Ms. Jananee Jayakumar, State VP of the Karnataka Anti Sexual Harassment Council, spoke on work-life harmony.

Mr. Deepak, President of GUVI Geek Networks, discussed fostering an entrepreneurial mindset.

Ms. Ponniyinselvi K M, Senior Manager at Cognizant Technology Solutions, shared leadership strategies.

The seminar concluded with a valedictory address by Ms. Adhilakshmi Logamurthy, an accredited mediator and gender consultant.

The seminar's discussions focused on shaping policies that will support the growth of women in STEM careers.


Department of BCom CA Industrial Visit to Tiruttani Co-op Sugar Mills Ltd on 04.01.2025

This visit to the Tiruttani Co-op Sugar Mills Ltd was to enable the students to accompany practical ideas in a functioning of Sugar manufacturing plant by identifying the processes and methodologies in handling sugar manufacturing processes and quality checking measures in the sugar manufacturing industries. The purpose of this visit is therefore to reduce the theory practice gap.

Tiruttani Co-op Sugar Mills Ltd is the largest cooperative sugar mill manufacturer situated in Tamil Nadu that is renowned for its superior quality sugar. The mill which was established with the aim to support the economy of the state and promote independent sugarcane farmers in the region is the one that supports the sugar and sugary products manufactured from sugarcane. Organisation has well equipped machinery, the production practice uses is eco-friendly hence transforms it to one of the best organizations.

The student said that they enjoyed the visit as it enriched them with knowledge and gave them a special chance to watch the work of the industry. Some said that it enriched their academic course and helped them appreciate better aspects of sugar production.

They congratulated the mill for its management for hosting them and offering a filled with knowledge.

This was useful for participants to gain knowledge about the operations of the sugar industry and its impact to the economy.

SACAS Hosts Informative Session on Menopause and Women's Health On December 24, 2024, the Department of B.Com. CA at S.A. College of Arts & Science (SACAS) conducted a session titled "Navigating Menopause: Empowering Health and Well-being for Women." Open to teaching and non-teaching staff, the event featured Dr. J.D.R. Hanitha from Madha Medical College, who provided insights on managing menopause through lifestyle changes, balanced nutrition, and mental health care.

An interactive activity session fostered positivity among participants. The session addressed a sensitive topic, promoting education and support. Attendees appreciated SACAS's commitment to prioritizing women’s health and fostering a supportive institutional environment.

SACAS and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan Host Anti-Drug Awareness Program On November 15, 2024, the Department of B.Com CA of S.A. College of Arts & Science (SACAS) and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan jointly organized an anti-drug awareness program to educate students on the dangers of drug abuse. The event featured special guests Ms. Bhuvaneshwari and Ms. Alamelu, police officials from Madhuvillaku Amalakka Pirivu, and Ms. Meenakshi from Nehru Yuva Kendra.

Ms. Bhuvaneshwari opened with an inspiring address on community vigilance, while Ms. Alamelu shared real-life insights, urging students to report suspicious activities. Ms. Meenakshi highlighted youth roles in building a drug-free society. The event concluded with a Q&A session, reinforcing the importance of proactive youth engagement in combating drug abuse.


Department of B.Com CA organized Kaval Yuthaivi Awareness Program on 07.10.2024

Department of B.Com CA in association with IWC organized  “Kaval Yuthaivi” which is an outreach program for combating the issues of modern society.  Its objectives focus on educating both women and young ladies about safe behaviors, the law, and techniques appropriate to issues of harassment and abuse and the other concerns of today's world. It showcases personal and community well-being and well-being education on a vast array of issues. Below are some of the main areas of focus

Harassment

The program focuses on the many ways one can be harassed, such as workplace harassment, harassment on the streets, and harassment on social media. In this program, participants learn to identify harassment, report it, and the relevant progressive legal processes available under Indian law. It aims to empower individuals to let any instance of harassment to not go unnoticed and take fair recourse within time in defense of it, for instance, seeking legal help or lodging police complaints or contacting some support system for the affected victims.

POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act)

Most of the subjects under this program are devoted to familiarizing the general public with the provisions under the POCSO Act and how it aims to protect minors from such sexual offenses. This educates the participants about how legal provisions help in the protection of children against abuses such as exploitation, prompting the participants to look for signs of sexual abuse against children, to report those signs through proper channels. Here, a strong framework is offered from the legal and social dimensions which go in to protect the vulnerable children.

Sexual Abuse

'Kaval Yuthavi' focuses on issues of sexual abuse when discussed. As it helps in removing the stigma associated with the problem, information is imparted for all forms of sexual abuse, including molestation, assault, and exploitation. The victims are told to open up with confidence in the justice system to protect and support them.

Love Affairs and OnlineAwareness

With the rise in the use of social media and online platforms, the number of online relationships has been on the rise. The program makes participants aware of the dangers involved in online relationships, such as false identities, emotional manipulation, and blackmail. They are told to exercise caution while indulging in a romantic relationship online and to protect their privacy while being aware of the risks of divulging personal information.

Marriage Life After Love Affair

This subject discusses the realities and challenges a wedding might bring in light of a past romantic relationship. The inevitable problems of trust, societal pressures, and compatibility in such unions, the latter of which is often of critical importance, will all be touched on. The program advises couples to communicate with each other freely, be mutually respectful of one another, and be understanding partners in their married lives after a love affair.

The Kaval Yuthaivi App

To penetrate deeper into the program and offer a pragmatic solution for personal safety, the Kaval Yuthaivi initiative has invented a mobile app specifically devoted to assisting helpless women and children during emergency situations. The app features:

SOS: Instant alert sending options for emergency contacts or police when the user is in danger.

Location tracking: The authorities are to track the user's location in real-time during emergencies.

Reporting system: Victims can report harassment and abuse incidents from the very app.

Legal advice: Quick legal guidance on harassment and abuses cases. his app helps provide instant

support and ensures the safety of the users, contributing to a safer environment for women and children.

The Kaval Yuthaivi program plays a crucial role in raising awareness about sensitive social issues such as harassment, sexual abuse, and online safety. It provides participants knowledge of legal protection and practical tools such as the Kaval Yuthaivi app for self-protection. The program aims to empower the individual, especially women and children, to lead safer lives and more informed ones in the social dilemma we are in today.


Department of BCom CA Guest Lecture: "Fintech and Crowdfunding Evolution: Empowering Startups and Democratizing Investment" on 07.10.2024

The B.Com (Computer Applications) Department hosted a very informative guest lecture about "Fintech and Crowdfunding Evolution: Helping Startups and Making Investing More Accessible" on 7.10.2024. The lecture was given by CA Shiva, Managing Director of India Operations and has a lot of experience in finance and investing.

Understanding Fintech and Its Importance in Today's Business: CA Shiva started by explaining what Financial Technology (Fintech) is and how it's changing global finance. He spoke about how new technologies like mobile payments, online banking, blockchain, and AI are changing traditional financial services. This change is giving businesses, especially startups, better and easier-to-use financial tools.

Crowdfunding- Making Investment Accessible: The speaker spoke about how crowdfunding has become a common way for businesses to get money. He explained different types of crowdfunding, like donation-based, reward-based, equity-based, and peer-to-peer lending. CA Shiva pointed out that crowdfunding platforms help small businesses and entrepreneurs get funding from many people, without needing banks or other traditional financial organizations.

Empowering Startups with Fintech and Crowdfunding: CA Shiva spoke about how fintech and crowdfunding work together to help startups and individual investors. He showed how fintech has made it easier for startups to get started and for people to invest. He gave examples of startups that used crowdfunding to get their first money. He also explained how fintech platforms are making financial services more accessible, so startups can manage their money with less need for big setups.

Problems and Possibilities: CA Shiva also spoke about the challenges of fintech companies and crowdfunding platforms face, like dealing with rules, avoiding fraud, and managing market changes. He advised future entrepreneurs to stay aware of the laws and ways to reduce risks. He also pointed out the chances that come from making investing more open, where people from all income levels can invest in startups and grow their money.

The guest lecture gave participants a thorough understanding of how fintech and crowdfunding are changing the financial world, helping new businesses, and making investing easier.


Department of BCom CA Organizing two-day Workshop on Tools for Analysis & Business Interpretation on 03.10.2024 and 04.10.2024

A two-day workshop called "Tools for Analysis & Business Interpretation" was led by Dr. S. Xavier, who is an Assistant Professor and the Head of the Statistics Department at Loyola College in Chennai. This happened on October 3rd and 4th, 2024.

Purpose of the Workshop

The main goal of the workshop was to give students the important tools they need to do statistical analysis and understand business data. The workshop focused on building a strong base in descriptive and inferential statistics and also gave students practical experience using SPSS software, which is commonly used for data analysis.

Highlights of workshop

During the workshop, Dr. Xavier taught the students basic statistical ideas and how they can be used in real business situations. The main topics covered were:

Descriptive Statistics: Simple measures like mean, median, mode, variance, and standard deviation, focusing on how to understand these in business data.

Inferential Statistics: Covered ideas like hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, and regression analysis, giving students the skills to predict and draw conclusions from data.

SPSS Software: A big part of the workshop was about using SPSS for practical tasks. Students learned to enter data, run statistical tests, and understand the results.

Dr. Xavier included practical exercises throughout the workshop, allowing students to use SPSS with their theoretical knowledge. These exercises helped students better understand and feel confident using the software for statistical analysis. 

The attendees really enjoyed the workshop and thought it was very useful and interesting. Many said that learning how to use SPSS in a hands-on way was very important and would help them in their studies and jobs. The simple explanations of statistics and the practical exercises made the topic easier to understand and more fun for the students.

The workshop effectively taught students important skills in analyzing data and understanding business information. It gave them a good starting point for using these skills in their future studies and work.

 

 

 


Department of B.Com Computer Applications Extension Program at Old Age Home for Mentally Challenged Elderly Women on 18.09.2024

B.Com Computer Applications students conducted a community awareness program at a  old age home located at  Porur that provides accommodation to mentally challenged elderly women. This extension program is a collaborative effort where students from all three academic years contributed significantly and demonstrated compassion and social responsibility towards this vulnerable group.

Donation of Essentials

Understanding the needs of the senior citizens, the students donated in the form of collecting essential items such as rice and other essentials. The response over these three years has been extraordinary, with students contributing wholeheartedly to ensure that women are equipped to meet their daily needs. These items are carefully packaged and distributed to the home administration to support the residents' well-being.

Entertainment and Communication

Students brought joy and brightness to the lives of elderly women by organizing cultural events. They brought a series of dances and song. Despite their mental problems, the elderly women have happy faces and applauded the music and efforts of the students. This discussion not only enlightened the people, but also made the students understand how to understand and care for the elderly.

Reflection

This effort and visit is not only about providing necessary things, but also about establishing relationships between students and elderly women. This activity encourages students to experience community service and personal growth. It helps them understand the importance of helping those in need, especially the elderly, who often face isolation and neglect. The joy and gratitude of the residents made the program very rewarding and memorable for all participants.

 Outcome:

The extension program promotes the values of care, empathy, and social responsibility among students. It also highlighted the importance of community support for the elderly, particularly those with mental challenges. The contributions made by the students and their time spent with the residents left a lasting impact, making it a significant step toward fostering a more compassionate society.
