NUTRIQUEST on March 6th 2024

The Department of Home Science – NFSMD of S.A. College of Arts & Science, orchestrated a thought-provoking seminar, 'NUTRIQUEST,' tailored for students of the department on March 6th 2024. The seminar boasted a distinguished lineup of speakers, each renowned in their respective domains. Ms.Bamini M, the former Vice President of Nutrition Support Service in Sundaram Medical Foundation unravelled the intricacies of Nutrition management in Burns. Mr.P.Krishnamoorthy the former President of the Indian Dietetic Association Chennai chapter, showed the  expertise by his presentation on Nutritional management in renal diseases. Ms. Shanthi Cauvery AT, the Managing Director of Elite Diet Studio, Chennai  focused on functional foods, offering a detailed exploration of their benefits. The seminar served as an intellectual feast, imparting substantial knowledge and practical insights. The diversity of topics covered, ranging from burns to renal diseases and functional foods, showcased the interdisciplinary nature of nutrition science.

The engagement with eminent speakers and the depth of content covered made it a truly enriching experience for all attendees.


“Catch them Young” on 24.2.24

Indian Oil Corporation in association with Dutchess club Chennai and the Department of Homescience-NFSMD of S.A. College of Arts and Science ,conducted a cooking competition for our students  on the theme “Catch them Young” on 24.2.24.The purpose was to bring out the creative and innovative culinary skill of the students. 54 students and 8 faculty members from various departments participated in the contest. The participants were asked to bring fully cooked dish and plate it at the venue. Three categories were given for the participants, namely salads & beverages,Main course and Desserts.The recipes were judged by Ms.Rathi Nilakandan, Co-founder of the Dutchess club, Ms.Jayanthi Murugesh, TN President Rashtriya life Saving Society RLSS and Ms.Prabha, Celebrity Nutritionist who are also members of the Dutchess Club.Prize winners were selected under all the categories and they be given an opportunity to participate in the grand finale to be held in Savera Hotel,Chennai on March 2nd 2024.


An interdepartmental competitions on 16.10.2023

To commemorate the World Food day, Department of Home Science - NFSMD at S.A. College of Arts & Science organized An interdepartmental competitions like Essay Writing, Poster Making and Slogan Writing on the centralized theme, "Water is Life. Water is Food. Leave No One Behind" of World Food Day 2023 for their students. Students from different departments actively participated in the various events and won prizes.

 

 


National Nutrition Week – Day 4

National Nutrition Week is being celebrated by the department of HS-NFSMD. On day 4, cooking competition entitled "Ready, Set,Cook" based on millets was conducted on 5.9.23.Students enthusiastically participated and showed their love for making healthy dishes out of millets.  Students came out with different dishes such as Kodo Millet Payasam, Barnyard Vegetable Cutlet, Paneer Foxtail Millet Dosa, Stuffed Ragi Dosa & Ragi Adai. Mr.S. Susidharan, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce (A&F) judged the recipes.


Educational visit-Aavin dairy industry at Ambattur

Students of  the Department of Home Science NFSM&D visited the Aavin dairy industry, Ambattur on 4th September 2023 as part of the National Nutrition Week. It was indeed an educational visit where the students gained immense knowledge about one of the  leading South Indian dairy plant.Our students were privileged to witness the different units like the production area, control room, cold room and the packaging area. The visit was a thought provoking experience to know  the team work behind the supply of safe dairy products on a day-to-day basis.


National Nutrition Week from September 1.09.2023 to 7.09.2023

The Department of Home Science at S.A.College of Arts and Science is celebrating National Nutrition Week from September 1.09.2023 to 7.09.2023.The theme for day one was HEALTHY by WHO. WHO defines health as a state of physical, social and mental wellbeing and not merely the absence of illness. With reference to that, the physical, social and mental health of the students were assessed. Physical fitness was assessed considering the BMI of the students. To analyse the social well-being the students were given the task of on the spot speaking and group discussion. To assess the mental health, a memory game was conducted. The 1st day event was successful owing to the involvement and the participation of the students.


The Breast feeding awareness week(from 1st to 7th August)

To commemorate the Breast feeding awareness week(from 1st to 7th August), Dept. of. Homescience-NFSM&D organised a human chain starting from Sudharshanam Vidhyalaya to SAEC entrance on 2.8.23.


A 5-day Baking workshop Organized by NFSM&D

The Department of Home Science hosted a 5-day baking workshop for the NFSM&D students from the 17th to 21st July 2023. Ms. Harshita, a young passionate home baker took a tremendous effort in explaining the basics and science behind baking and its techniques.

Day 1 – The session was on how to start up a baking business and be a successful home baker. It emphasized that perseverance is the key. The resource person gave a live demo of her signature Millet Based Carrot Cake. She taught the right technique to combine the cake batter so that the cake is soft and fluffy and not dense and leathery.

Day 2 - The students were taught to bake Eggless Chocolate Cup Cake. Tips on making the right batter consistency were shared. Ms. Harshita also taught the students how to make a ganache. She also asked the students to volunteer and get hands-on training.  

Day 3 – The session was on her seasonal signature Mango Tub recipe. She gave a brief explanation of bento cakes and the mould to bake them. She demonstrated how to make a fresh fruit compote using fresh produce. The students also learnt how to decorate a cake.

Day 4 – The session was on how to make healthy versions of cookies and the variations that can be incorporated.

Day 5 – The session was on the ingredients and the procedure to make brownies. Students were given a chance to follow her instructions step by step. She also taught the students how to frost a cake. Students enjoyed frosting the cake. It turned out to look good on the very first attempt of our students.

It was a feast for the students to taste the cakes and to learn the right recipe and techniques to get a perfect finish. She highlighted the 3 important aspects to get the desired result in baking. They are the Temperature, Mode and Time that we set to bake. 

She wished our students and ended the session by saying that she looks forward to see young upcoming entrepreneurs to start their own baking business by following their passion.

 


NFSM & D- Industrial Visit “Aachi Masala – Scientific Food Testing Services”

A group of 39 comprised of 37 students from I, II, III B.Sc. of Department of Home science - Nutrition, Food service management and Dietetics along with 2 staff members went for an Industrial Visit to “Aachi Masala – Scientific Food Testing Services” on 22/07/2023. The unit consists of 3 labs namely Food microbiology lab, Food proximate lab and Instrumentation lab where the samples of food are being tested for its quality in terms of nutrition. The students gained immense knowledge about the different types of testing methods which was done there with a detailed explanation.


“Savour the Flavour of Wholesome Nutrition”

A talk on “Savour the Flavour of Wholesome Nutrition” was held on 18th July 2023 organized by the department of Home Science – NFSMD at SACAS. This interesting session was taken by Ms. Sangeetha, Nutritionist - the founder of the Auro Diet Clinic. She ignited the young minds of our Nutrition students by briefing the basics and the importance of diet and the key factors to remember for healthy living. She summarised the session with 3 important factors - Quantity, Quality, and Regularity of the food we consume.
